Primary research
SUMMARY
The essay summarizes the main findings of primary research on the potential viewers of a romance drama movie. The respondents were mostly younger than 18 years old, and there were about the same number of males and females, but our team chose to emphasize the female perspective. Most of the respondents liked the idea of watching a romance drama movie, and some of them suggested adding some humor to attract more viewers. The team also got some feedback on their script, with compliments on the characters and the mystery aspects but criticisms on the way they wrote. The essay ends with some suggestions for overcoming the difficulties of filming and enhancing the character portrayals.
ANALYSIS
I. AGE GROUP
Last updated: 12/7/2023
We circulated a form and got 54 responses. Most of them (88.9%) are under 18 years old. The next biggest group (18-24 years old) is much smaller. Since our audience is mostly teenagers, we have to make sure our content is safe and respectful for all ages. We don’t want to offend anyone or need any parental guidance warnings. We also want to choose content that our audience can relate to.
We looked at the script and the online sources, and the survey results. Our beach scene has a dilemma. Some doctors say talking about suicide with teens is risky. But the National Library of Medicine, a US government site, says more young people are killing themselves. Our screenplay solved the problem by using a metaphor.
II. GENDER
The data from the form indicates an equal distribution of male and female respondents. However, previous research by the Romance Writers of America (RWA) and Goodreads suggests that the majority of romance readers and writers are female. The romance genre has been predominantly targeted at women due to the influence of social and cultural factors on gender norms. Based on this, our team concluded that we would emphasize the female perspective in our project.
Nonetheless, we acknowledge that individual preferences are diverse and complex, and that not all women are attracted to romance while not all men are indifferent to it.
III. WOULD YOU?
Most of the 54 people in our group (42) are interested in a Romance Drama film. 27 said “Yes” and 15 said “Maybe”. We could make the opening scene more appealing by adding another sub-genre. Comedy is a good choice because many people like it.
The combination of romance and comedy may also offer a unique opportunity for creative expression and innovation in the film industry. According to a study by the University of Southern California, the diversity of the film industry has improved in recent years, but still lags behind the diversity of the population. For example, in 2019, only 10.7% of the directors of the top 100 films were women, and only 16.8% were people of color. By incorporating romance and comedy, filmmakers can explore different perspectives and experiences of love and laughter, and challenge the stereotypes and norms that have dominated the genre. This can also appeal to a more diverse and inclusive audience, who may appreciate seeing themselves and their stories represented on the screen.
IV. FEEDBACK
Our work has gotten a lot of comments lately, and we found out that many people like our characters more than our script. Some of our readers even mentioned the mystery parts that we added to the story and said they were thrilled by them. But we also got some bad comments from readers who thought our script was boring and just like a slice of life, which they didn’t enjoy. This made us wonder how we have presented our script before and if the scene at school or our writing style made people think that way. After looking into it, we realized that our word choice might have confused and misled our readers.
The feedback that we received also suggests that our characters are more engaging and memorable than our script. This could mean that we have done a good job of creating interesting and complex characters, but it could also mean that our script lacks originality and creativity. We should try to balance our character development and our plot development, and make sure that both are equally compelling and relevant to our story. We should also avoid using clichés and stereotypes, and instead use our own voice and style to make our script stand out.
V. RECOMMENDATION
Out of 30 responses, these two are the most descriptive of how we can improve. They pointed out that we:
- Concerns about filming the "basketball game" scene due to the large number of attendees and limited retakes.
- Caution is needed when filming the first scene at the beach at night due to the darkness, and the need to consider lighting to avoid visibility issues.
- Feedback on the character description for "EMMA DEROSS DIAZ", with concerns that the language used may be too complex for the target audience.
- Overall recommendation to seriously consider the feasibility of filming these shots.
- Increasing the proportion time for characters' speech/ dialogue to be more expressive through wording, voice emotions
