Genre Exploration - Psychological thriller
What is a genre?
A genre is a group or classification of literary, artistic, or entertainment works that are distinguished by particular conventions, themes, styles, and other features that help define and classify the works.
What is the importance of genre?
Film genres are categories or classifications that group movies based on similar themes, narrative structures, settings, and stylistic elements. These classifications help audiences and filmmakers understand and navigate the vast landscape of cinema.
Why did I choose my genre?
Psychological thriller/horror novel
Thriller is my all-time favorite genre of media, especially psychological thrillers. The psychological features of the characters and their effects on the plot are included in the thriller genre in addition to the exposure to perilous twists and turns that are shown to us. This type of movie delves into the motivations and ideas of its characters, allowing us to see how their actions drive the storyline to the limits of human ethics and morality.
The genre of psychological thriller includes elements of suspense and psychological fiction. It is frequently used to characterize works of literature or films that feature psychological narratives in suspenseful or exciting situations. With ideas resembling Gothic and detective fiction, this genre is a subgenre of the more expansive thriller narrative framework. Psychological thrillers are usually shown through "narratives with domesticated settings in which action is suppressed and where thrills are provided instead via investigations of the psychologies of the principal characters."(Packer, Sharon (2007). Movies and the Modern Psyche).

Psychological thriller/horror film
A psychological thriller stands out from other genres by emphasizing the characters' mental states, including their perceptions, ideas, and struggles with reality. There are frequently elements of mystery, drama, action, and paranoia in psychological thrillers. The genre is closely related to and sometimes overlaps with the psychological drama and psychological horror genres, generally involving more horror and terror elements and themes and more disturbing or frightening scenarios ( "Defining the Thriller Genre in Movies and TV". 5 Nov 2020.).
Techniques frequently used in psychological thrillers
- Plot twist: an unexpected development in a book, film, television program, etc.
- Unreliable narrator: any narrator who misleads readers, either deliberately or unwittingly.
- MacGuffin: an object, event, or character in a film or story that serves to set and keep the plot in motion despite usually lacking intrinsic importance. Due to circumstances, personality faults, or psychological issues, many people are unreliable.
- RedHerring: an irrelevant topic introduced to divert the attention of the audience. A red herring is used to lead the audience to make false assumptions and mislead its attention.
